Every year in January we all make resolutions. Promising ourselves that we are going to change things for the better, then when February comes around, our “normal” lives have once again taken over and those resolutions have once again taken a back seat till next January. Sound familiar?
As a kid I just knew I would be jetting around in my airplane-car by now. Oh, well I guess some things are still just a fantasy. However, looking back to my childhood I can see a LOT of things that were a fantasy then to be a reality NOW! How the heck did that happen? It came about because someone somewhere decided the old just wasn’t good enough and they wanted something new. Just like most people,we wait till the new of the year to take a closer look our life, evaluate the old and choose what I want to change about it. The question I have for you is…WHY WAIT? Today is a great time to dream of a better tomorrow.
Today! Right NOW! (hint, hint: as is everyday! ) is in fact the most perfect day of your entire life to make a true commitment to have a better tomorrow.
Take a moment to look back at that dream you have had stuck in your head all these years and make a decision about it. Choose to leave it there and always wonder “what if” or choose to bring it out, dust it off and choose to make it real. People do it everyday! Why not you too? Maybe its as personal as loosing some extra pounds,or running a 5K. Maybe its kicking an addiction you know is harming you. Or maybe still its opening that business you always wanted to or writing that book. It may not change the world, then again maybe it will but the truth is that it doesn’t have to but whatever it is,I bet it will change your life. Do it or don’t do it. Either way…. It’s YOUR Choice.
RIGHT NOW, I challenge you to challenge yourself to make your life better simply by choosing to do something different today. Make today and every day a day you look back on and say to yourself; That wasn’t so hard! I took one small step forward towards my dream today! It wasn’t perfect but I learned a valuable lesson today! That was a great day! …..it doesn’t matter what you do just take Nike’s advise. Just Do It! then say to yourself something positive about it. And trust me it works hundreds of times better if you say it out loud!
I have seen these words many times and really don’t know who to give credit to for them but on this day I find them fitting: Today I close the door to the past, open the door to the future, take a deep breath, step on through and start a new chapter in my life.
Did you know that the No. 1 goal for most people and the No. 1 resolution people make every year is to become more physically fit? It is followed by improving one’s financial situation, improving one’s health, losing weight, and reading more. In fact, according to a survey conducted by time management experts Franklin Covey, a full 35 percent of New Year’s resolutions are broken before the end of January of the successive year. AND only 23 percent of New Year’s Eve resolutions were kept at all. The survey goes on to say that distraction and being busy doing other things is the main problem. 40 percent blamed it on having too many things to do to keep their commitment. While another 33 percent blames not fulfilling their resolutions on not being committed to the resolutions they made in the first place.
New Years is not the only time this takes place. People follow this same pattern over and over again and use the same excuses over and over again all year long concerning them making a change in their life. SO, ask yourself this question. What makes today any different than every other thus far?
Sounds to me that only 33 percent were actually truthful. There is only one reason we don’t move forward with a positive change and that is simply a lack of commitment to actually doing something in the first place. If you want a good indicator of where your commitment is, look no further than your checkbook and your spare time. There are two bold truths in that statement. First, You will always find the money or the way to buy something you really want and Secondly, you will always find time for something you really want to do.
So what is the secret to moving forward with your dream or making that change for the better something you can stick with? .
#1 Get Clear about what you really want: Think about that one dream you always wanted to do or that one change you either know you need to make or want to make. Maybe its to run a marathon, fit into those skinny jeans, open that business or quit smoking. You should be asking yourself a few questions. Is it something important to YOU? Is it something you find occupying your your spare time and thoughts? Is it something your passionate about? The answers to these questions will help you find that one big life change you can commit to.
If your a little unclear, try listing all the things you would like to happen on a piece of paper then choose the one that means the most to you. Then pursue that one. The main objective here is not to see how many things you can put on your list, its about succeeding at one and being part of that 23% that actually does it. BUT DON”T THROW YOUR WHOLE LIST AWAY!
Because here’s the magic……Success breeds success! Achievement breeds more achievement!
AND …Success and Achievement in your life brings greater happiness and joy to your every day and a confidence that allows you to achieve more than you ever thought you could. Once you begin to find success in one NEW area of your life you will have the confidence and drive to start knocking out all the other items on that resolution list. Before you know it you will be adding things to that list that you never thought were possible.
#2 Do SOMETHING every day: It’s happened before and I bet your thinking it will happen again…You get all fired up about a “great” idea or made a decision to “change” something in your life to only circle back to the same place you were before you got all fired up. Your “circle of life” looks like it always will be your reality. But that’s a lie you have been maliciously convinced of.
Let’s be honest, we have all been to seminars, have read books, listened to audio recordings or in some other way heard all about what it takes to change something in your life. AND It all works doesn’t it? For a while at least, then again you find yourself back in the same place you were before started it all to begin with. Sometimes change is just too difficult to fit in with your life as you know it, right?
Let me tell you about a REVELATION I had: I was listening to a co worker talk about moving a large pile of gravel, by himself with only a hand shovel and it brought to mind an old saying I had heard most of my life but have no idea where it came from or who said it, so no credits here. Ha! . “How do you eat an elephant? …. One bite at a time!” That was it! Even though moving that large pile of gravel, like eating an elephant, seemed a HUGE task, it is more easily done little by little and not in one huge scoop or bite.
Change does not happen all at once nor does it have to be difficult !
My co worker went on to say that the first day he worked and worked and worked ALL day at spreading the gravel around, got less than a quarter done and that it took him two weeks to recover and get re motivated to start again.. After that he went out and only spread a little bit each evening. He didn’t over exert himself and believe it or not he finished the job in less time than it took him to get re-motivated after the first day that he beat himself up so badly. Like moving this pile of gravel or “eating an Elephant” Even making one, seemingly insignificant change, if done everyday will add up over time.
Small changes to habits that might seem so insignificant that you hardly noticed the change at all will in fact result in BIG changes when looked back on several months later. Soon enough you will see those habits that kept you in the same place every day never to return and those little changes that looked so small become a big part of your everyday life. If real change is going to happen it must be something easy enough at first that you will continue to do it five years from now, ten years and for the rest of your life.
So whether it’s taking off a few pounds, or starting that new dream business you’ve always wanted, nothing will ever happen if you don’t start moving towards it …Today taking One Bite at a Time!
These may seem way to simple and almost silly, lets face it you have even heard this many times before but DO YOU KNOW WHY? Because they are eternal truths. Think about them, put them into use and watch your life change!
